Extra Inning Victory Pushes Scots Win Streak To Eight

Tuesday, March 19, 2013
ROME, Ga. -- Sterling Witt's two-out, two-run single in the top of the 11th inning produced the eventual game-winning runs as the Covenant baseball team won its eighth straight game with a 10-9 victory over Berry on Tuesday evening.

The win pushes the Scots to 15-3 overall, continuing the best start in program history dating back to 2007. The previous best start after the first 18 games of the season was a 12-6 mark from the 2011 team.

The win is also Covenant's second 11 inning outcome in the last week as the Scots defeated Piedmont 9-8 in 11 innings last Tuesday.

Covenant found itself down 8-6 heading into the top of the ninth inning. David Murphy led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second courtesy of a Berry balk. K.C. Simons followed with a single to right field that scored Murphy. Representing the tying run, Simons was stuck at third with two outs before Scott Gillespie came through with an RBI single to knot the score at 8-8.

Berry and Covenant traded scoreless frames until the 11th inning. Will Cleland singled and stole second before advancing to third on a ground out with one away. Gillespie walked and Witt came up with runners on second and third with two outs and gave Covenant a 10-8 lead with a single up the middle plating both runners.

Witt came on in relief in the bottom of the 11th and allowed one run, but worked out of a first and third jam with two outs to secure his first save of the season.

Simons, Cleland, Gillespie, and Braeden Lane each had two hits for Covenant. Gillespie and Witt had two RBIs apiece.

The Scots stole a season-high 11 bases, three by Cleland and two from Perry Rigby, while being caught just twice.

Alec Mitchell (3-1) picks up the victory for Covenant as he threw 3.2 scoreless frames allowing three hits and striking out two. Alhanon Miller got the start and went five innings giving up three runs on five hits.

Covenant opened the game with two runs in the first inning and four more in the third to take a 6-2 lead. The Scots had a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh before Berry scored five runs on six hits to go ahead 8-6.

Michael Gwin (0-1) gets the loss for the Vikings as he allowed both runs in the 11th inning. Alex McGill and Kevin Scott had three hits for Berry with McGill driving in three runs.

Covenant returns to play on Friday when they host Georgia Gwinnett in game one of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday in Lawrenceville, Ga. to complete the series.

Location Of The Delta Queen Is The Problem - And Response

The Delta Queen is a magnificent part of history and in many ways I'm pleased she is in town. Having the boat where she is is the problem.
