The Tennessee Valley Authority is teaming up with state and local officials and other federal agencies to conduct springtime prescribed burning on public lands managed by TVA in Tennessee and Alabama.
The 2013 prescribed burn management program began this month and runs through May.
Prescribed burns are planned near Chickamauga, Guntersville, Wheeler, Pickwick, Tims Ford, Kentucky and Bear Creek reservoirs in Alabama and Tennessee. The burns will be in the following counties: Rhea, Hamilton, Benton, Franklin and Coffee in Tennessee; and Marshall, Franklin, Limestone and Colbert in Alabama.
“Prescribed burning is a recognized natural resource management tool,” said Bruce Schofield, vice president of TVA Property & Natural Resources. “These controlled burns can help maintain and establish wildlife habitat, and they can reduce thatch and leaves that help fuel wildfires.”
TVA is responsible for managing 293,000 acres of public land and 11,000 miles of public shoreline in the TVA region. In carrying out its land-management responsibilities, TVA is guided by its mandate to consider the effects of its activities in such areas as land reclamation, public recreation, economic development and wildlife preservation.
