Retired Gordon College President Dr. Lawrence Weill will read from his debut novel, Incarnate, in a program Wednesday, March 27, in the Eddie Miller Room of the Pope Student Center at Dalton State College.
The book, released this month from BlackWyrm Publishing, tells the story of a woman, Lara Joyner, who comes to believe that her son is Christ incarnate.
Incarnate is driven by this woman’s character and readers struggle between wanting to sympathize and knowing she is deeply troubled, according to the book’s publicist. The story follows Lara and her two sons, Dale and Louis, as she pushes Dale to perform miracles and save humanity. Although obviously unable to do so, he goes through the motions to protect his younger brother. Told alternately from Lara’s perspective and from the other principles in the story, the plot follows the trials brought on by Lara’s spiraling madness, her husband’s desperate search for his family, and the children’s bewilderment and fear.
Dr. Weill will read from his work and sign books; copies of Incarnate can be purchased from the Dalton State bookstore.
Dr. Weill served as the second President of Gordon College in Barnesville for three and a half years. He retired from academic life in 2012. He edited Out in Front: The College President as the Face of the Institution, an ACE series on higher education title. He has also published numerous papers on town-gown relations, the arts, student advisement, and peer tutoring. In addition he served as an editorial assistant for Research in Higher Education.
The event begins with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and the reading at 7. The program is free and open to the public; it is sponsored by Dalton State’s Office of Auxiliary Services, Office of Student Life, and the Dalton State Bookstore.
