Lady Mocs Softball Hosts Appalachian State In Three-Game Series

The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team (16-14, 1-2 SoCon) welcome Appalachian State (11-9, 5-1 SoCon) to Frost Stadium Saturday and Sunday to open the home Southern Conference slate. The Lady Mocs entertain the Mountaineers Saturday in a double-header beginning at 1 p.

m. before wrapping up the three-game series Sunday at 2 p.m.

"We have to be ready," Head Coach Frank Reed said. "Appalachian State is playing some good softball right now, and hopefully our wins over Murrsy State gives us some good momentum going into the weekend."

Chattanooga is coming off a 5-4 extra-inning win against the Murray State Racers Wednesday at Frost Stadium, searching for its first SoCon series win. Thus far, the Lady Mocs are 1-2 in SoCon play with a win over Furman in Greenville, S.C. Freshman Rachel Albritton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) is 1-0 in conference play while sophomore Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) and freshman Kaisey Carson (Indianapolis, Ind.) are each in search of their first conference wins of the season.

Senior Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.) currently leads the Lady Mocs offense with a .380 batting average and 41 hits. Poteat also leads Chattanooga with 11 extra-base hits and 26 runs scored. Junior Tyler Templet (Woodstock, Ga.) is batting .357, through 42 at-bats, and senior Kasey Tydingco (Fairfield, Calif.) follows closely behind with a .356 average and 31 hits. Third baseman Sarah Beth Roberts (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) currently ranks second on the team with 33 hits.

The Mountaineers come into the weekend with momentum in the SoCon, claiming a series from Western Carolina and sweeping Samford to improve to 5-1 in the conference. App State has claimed notable wins over Troy, Charleston Southern and Winthrop while matchup with Alabama and Florida State early in the season.

ASU is led by senior Allie Cashion, batting .389 through 16 games, and hits leader sophomore Sarah Warnock, who has collected a team-best 24 hits on the season. Cashion leads the Mountaineers with 11 extra-base hits, including five home runs, and totals 42 bases on the young season. Junior first baseman Lindsay Loudermilk leads the offense with 18 runs batted in.

Sophomore Alissa Schoelkopf has proven to be the ace for ASU, thus far, leading the team with a 3.81 ERA and seven wins. The pitcher has tossed six complete games and thrown 71.2 innings. Shivaun Landeros has appeared in as many games as Schoelkopf and started nine games. Landeros sports a 3.92 ERA and stands at 4-4 on the season.

Woman Found Dead On Lovell Road; Police Looking For Terry Releford

A woman was found dead on Sunday morning at 8912 Lovell Road, and police are seeking a "person of interest" in the case. Deputies responded to that location at approximately 8 a.m. on a suspicious death. On arrival "deputies found a dead female in her 30s deceased from an apparent homicide."
