Friday, March 22, 2013

Georgia Gwinnett defeated host Covenant College, 5-4, Friday afternoon in a college baseball game to end the Scots eight-game winning streak

Trailing 5-1 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Covenant (15-4) scored three runs, but Georgia Gwinnett (19-6) was able to stop the rally and win the game.

The two teams will play a double header Saturday afternoon in Lawrenceville, Ga. with the first game set for 4 p.m.

In the bottom of the ninth, David Lockwood led off the inning with a double that was followed by a Georgia Gwinnett fielding error and a Sterling Witt walk to load the bases with nobody out. Perry Rigbythen cut the Scots' deficit in half with a two-run single leaving Covenant down 5-3 with runners at the corners. Braeden Lane followed and had his sharp line drive snared by the first baseman who tagged first to complete the double play.

The inning was kept alive by a Paul Phillips RBI single to make it 5-4, but Phillips was then tagged out between second and third on a steal attempt to end the game.

Rigby finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while Lockwood went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Will Cleland and Phillips each added a run batted in for Covenant.

Georgia Gwinnett had a four-run third inning off Covenant starter Micah Mabe with Christian Van Camp's three-run home run to right-center field capping the scoring. The Grizzlies led 5-0 after five innings of play.

Mabe (5-1) received his first loss of the season. The left-hander went six innings allowing five earned runs on seven hits, while striking out five. Spencer Smith came on in relief and threw three scoreless and hitless innings and punched out three.

Sheldon Cooper (4-0) notches the win for the Grizzlies as he surrendered six hits and two earned runs. Van Camp secured the win to pick up his first save of the season. Van Camp had four RBIs at the dish and Robbie Payne went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

I am still wincing over the fact a horrendous bill passed in the state legislature that would make whistle-blowers into criminals would have actually gone into law had it not been for Governor Bill Haslam’s eleventh-hour veto. Called the “Ag-Gag bill,” similar efforts in other states have also soured because it is no more than a Catch-22 trick to protect those who abuse animals, ... (click for more)
