Sunday, March 03, 2013
The UTC women's tennis team posted a 7-0 sweep of Western Carolina at The Baylor School today. Cold temps in the Scenic City forced the match indoors, but UTC was still able to improve to 9-1 overall and even its Southern Conference record a 1-1 with Sunday's win.

The Lady Mocs won all 10 matches for the fifth time this season. It was also their seventh shutout of the year. The Catamounts dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in SoCon action.

Freshmen Kayla Jones (Memphis, Tenn.

) and Alison Storie (Johnson City, Tenn.) got things started with an 8-1 win over Sara Ruiz Pajares and Erin Maguire at No. 3. Senior Jenna Nurik (Roswell, Ga.) and Kaylene Chadwell (Franklin, Tenn.) were next off the court with an 8-2 victory over Nicole Nielly and Shannon Bettiol at No. 1. It was their sixth straight doubles win as they improved to 8-1 in the spring and 12-2 overall.

With the first point decided, junior Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) and sophomore Claire Mulyadi (Semarang, Indonesia) kept UTC undefeated with an 8-4 win over Stacia Kissell and Karen Jimenez at No. 2.

Jones was first off the court in singles play, only dropping one game in her (6-1, 6-0) win over Pajares at No. 3. Jones is undefeated in spring play at 10-0 and has an impressive 21-2 overall record. Fellow freshman Kelsey Coots (Huntsville, Ala.) put UTC up 3-0 with her (6-0, 6-3) win over Nielly at No. 4.

Chadwell clinched the win with a (6-1, 6-2) victory over Jimenez at No. 2. With the match decided, Nurik, Mulyadi and freshman Jovana Pecovski (Apitan, Serbia) also posted singles wins.

"It was a good day for us," stated head coach Jeff Clark. "We played well and it was nice to see us rebound after our first loss of the season on Friday."

Location Of The Delta Queen Is The Problem

The Delta Queen is a magnificent part of history and in many ways I'm pleased she is in town. Having the boat where she is is the problem. The boat blocks the view of and from the prettiest park in our town. The crew take many of the parking spots around the park leaving families to park across Frazier and schlep their kids, strollers and picnics to the park. You don't get fireworks ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Aimee Gets New Hands

Aimee Copeland reached for a potato chip and, with a pretty smile, popped it into her mouth and crunched it up. It sounds like nothing but it was an incredible “God moment” just one year after her bout with necrotizing fasciitis capitated the world and left a beautiful young woman with no hands, her left leg removed on one side and a right foot amputated on another. Last May ... (click for more)
