Berke Is Elected Mayor; Hakeem Has 6 More Votes Than Murphy; Henderson Wins District 1, Mitchell Takes District 2, McGary Loses To Freeman, Anderson Topples Rico, Smith Beats Ladd, Benson In Runoff With Grohn

Tuesday, March 05, 2013

Former state Senator Andy Berke was elected mayor of Chattanooga in Tuesday's elections, and there will be a number of new faces on the City Council.

At least five newcomers will be sworn into office along with Mr. Berke in early April, and Jack Benson has to win a runoff to keep his District 4 seat. Former City Councilman Yusuf Hakeem had six more votes than incumbent Peter Murphy in District 9. He actually did not get over 50 percent of the vote since there were seven write-in votes.

Councilman Murphy said that means there will be a runoff.

Attorney Berke finished far ahead of Guy Satterfield and Chester Heathington.

Former County School Board Chairman Chip Henderson was the victor in District 1 to replace Deborah Scott. His closest competitor was former school administrator Tom McCullough.

Former City Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Mitchell was the winner in the District 2 race where Sally Robinson is retiring. Roger Tuder finished second and Priscilla Simmons third.

Ken Smith defeated incumbent Pam Ladd in District 3. That race turned partisan as Republican groups backed Mr. Smith and Democratic groups Ms. Ladd. Rep. Gerald McCormick was a chief Smith supporter.

Incumbent Jack Benson was ahead of four challengers in District 4, but faced a runoff with Larry Grohn.

Chris Anderson won over incumbent Manny Rico in District 7.

Moses Freeman, former city official, defeated Councilman Andrae McGary in District 8. Councilman McGary got into the contest late after first saying he did not intend to run following a loss in a state Senate race.

Russell Gilbert in District 5 and Carol Berz in District 6 were unopposed.

The Hamilton County Democratic Party congratulated Andy Berke "on a resounding victory in the contest for mayor of Chattanooga."

“Andy Berke was an outstanding Democratic state senator who fought for his constituents in Nashville,” said HCDP Chairman Paul Smith. “He will be just as outstanding as mayor, moving our city forward into the future.”

Mr. Smith also extended congratulations to Moses Freeman, who will now represent City Council District 8, and Chris Anderson, who will now represent District 7.

Scandals At Home And Abroad

Since my hip operation and time in recovery, I have tried to set aside things that are insignificant to me and to average Americans. Don't get me wrong here. What these people are doing (Bengahzi) is despicable be they left or right wing, and they have been doing it (both sides) for a long time. But the dirty deeds themselves carry little weight as to what they mean to you or me. ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: 50 Facts About Our Bodies

Maybe 20 years ago I became entranced by a book called “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made.” It was co-authored by a surgeon, Paul Brand, and a Christian writer, Phillip Yancey, and gave one specific after another about the human body and how only God could have created such a miraculous machine. Today the book is a classic and I have marveled ever since over how unbelievable human ... (click for more)
