Questionable Moc Coaching Choices - And Response (3)

Monday, May 20, 2013

David Blackburn proved that he rolled an elder vice chancellor to hire Will Wade. I can't find one game Wade coached. Should we think he is a better coach than the Georgia coach that won the SEC?

At least four jobs were open in and around Wade's hometown, Nashville. No one mentioned his name.

While Blackburn was preaching in the Chattanoogan Room about the fairness of the search, it was reported that Wade had the job. I reported this to several boosters.

Wade was not running the show at VCU, Rhoades was the man next to the coach.

No one wants to watch UTC play Elon. In the past we have watched Jimmy B. from Baylor, Jordan, Worthy, David Robinson.

We have another coach in-training and I wish him the best. But save the snow job for people who don't follow the sport.

Lastly, in 2013 we don't have a lady good enough to coach the Lady Mocs basketball? So he rolled the ladies too.

I found myself amused by Mr. Flint's letter concerning the recent hires of Jim Foster and Will Wade. He states in various ways that both of them were "questionable."

First lets address a very easy hire to defend, Jim Foster. Jim Foster is going to be inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame with a career win total to date of 783. He has coached his teams to 26 NCAA tournament appearances including three wins in the SEC Tournament over UTK with Pat Summit.  Mr. Flint couldn't attack his credentials so he states that we should have hired a "lady." I thought we were supposed to become a color and sex blind society, hire the best person available for the job, regardless of race or sex. Obviously Mr. Flint does not see it that way.

With respect to players who he says we have watched play in the Roundhouse, he brings up two players who never set foot in the Roundhouse, David Robinson and James Worthy. David Robinson played at Navy from the 83-83 season through the 86-87 season. UTC hosted the Naval Academy in the December 1982 holiday tournament. Mr. Robinson was still a senior in high school. UTC opened its first year in the Roundhouse playing host to the University of North Carolina on Dec. 21, 1982. While that team featured Jimmy Braddock of Baylor, Michael Jordan, Brad Daughtry, Sam Perkins and  more, James Worthy had entered the NBA draft after the previous season and was playing his rookie year in the NBA while Mr. Flint was apparently at the Roundhouse watching him play in his dreams.

Now we come to Will Wade. Yes, he has never coached a game as a head coach. Neither had Phil Jackson, Dean Smith, Bobby Knight, Red Auerbach, Mike Krzyzewski, and every other coach in existence until they got a chance to be hired.  Using Mr. Flint's rationale Will Wade would never get a head coaching job because there will always be a former SEC head coach out there available for the job. Don't forget, Dennis Felton was fired at the University of Georgia, so obviously he isn't or wasn't perfect there.

Part of any manager's job, and the athletic director is a manager, is to identify talent, be it young or experienced, hire that talent and put them into a position where they can thrive. Mr. Blackburn has decided that Will Wade has that talent, which has been echoed by many coaches throughout the country, so he has hired him. Will there be some stumbles along his way? Undoubtedly, but all coaches in all sports have them.

Mr. Flint, come to the Roundhouse this fall, come with an open mind, and root for the Mocs and Lady Mocs. A new generation is starting, and myself, I think it will be a great one.

David Blackburn’s coaching hires have had almost universal approval from fan and foe alike.

The comments from Anthony Flint are just further proof of the old adage...”you can’t please everyone.”

It would appear that Mr. Flint hasn't read a single article, listened to a single interview or spoken to a single Moc fan regarding the basketball coaching hires new AD David Blackburn has made.

In regards to Jim Foster...  I have no idea who else he wanted?  Was Pat Summit applying and I missed it?  Thinking that we have to have a lady to coach a ladies team does a dis-service to our ladies team.  Wes Moore has been a fine coach for many years.  Some of us early on hoped Kellie Harper might return, but she took another choice.  How anyone could not be happy with Jim Foster blows my mind.

In regards to Will Wade, his former head coach at VCU and everyone he has ever worked with have had nothing but great things to say about him.

I was a huge supporter of Coach John Shulman, but I'm certainly willing to give Coach Wade the chance he deserves...  and I hope he brings many championships back to the Roundhouse.

AD Blackburn is doing a great job.

Go Mocs!  Go Lady Mocs!

Senator Corker's Laments

I hope Senator Corker has kept a list of all of his solutions to imminent problems/actions he foresaw during the past several years but to no avail.  Most of them have fallen too often with much fanfare by Harry Reid with nervous silence of his followers who are too accustomed to what follows to go the other way.  I am anxious for the day when the Senate can open without ... Quick-Strike Marion County Too Much For Tyner

The Marion County Warriors didn’t do a whole lot offensively in the second half, but they more than made up for it in the first half as they defeated the Tyner Rams by a 25-6 final at Finley Stadium Thursday night. The Warriors were forced to punt on their first possession, but they scored touchdowns on their next four possessions and that was more than enough to secure a big ... (click for more)
