Man Who Allegedly Planted Evidence For Murray Judge Pleads Guilty To Meth Charges

Saturday, June 15, 2013

A man who authorities say planted evidence on a woman's car at the request of former Murray County Magistrate Bryant Cochran pleaded guilty in Federal Court in Rome, Ga., on Friday morning on a meth charge..

Clifford "C.J. Joyce" appeared before Federal Judge Harold Murphy.

Magistrate Cochran resigned after allegations of sexual misconduct while in office.

Attorney McCracken Poston, who represents Angela Garmley in a lawsuit against Cochran and other Murray County officials, said Joyce lived in one of Bryant Cochran's trailers and did odd jobs for him.

He said Joyce "planted the drugs on my client's car for the then-Judge Cochran."

The attorney claimed that Joyce "was to get extra money if he could steal her (Ms. Garmley's)  phone. C.J. did show up at Angie's house a day or so before she was stopped, around 1:30 a.m., acting nervous and asking if he could trade a guitar with her father.  He kept staring at her phone and she noticed it enough to feel uncomfortable about it and picked it up from the table.  He then asked her if he could leave out a window, without explanation, and to get him out of her house, she let him."

The attorney said, "As the conspiracy began to collapse under GBI investigation, Angie received a call from C.J. and others, confessing his involvement and implicating the former judge, who had resigned just after Angie's false arrest.  I responded on her behalf and within hours they were talking with the GBI."

Attorney Poston said, "With the convictions of the two former Murray County officers who pulled over and arrested my clients, and now the man who planted the drugs, the case will finally focus on the main conductor of this sad orchestrated effort to silence and discredit Angie Garmley, who was complaining of the judge's sexual advances in his office."
