Kewl Race Combines Paddleboarding, Rock Climbing, Trail Running

  • Thursday, June 6, 2013

It’s not a color run, 5K, or typical triathlon. The Kewl Race is a brand new type of adventure challenge combining rock climbing, standup paddleboarding and trail running into one event.

“This is the most unique adventure race you will find in the Southeast,” said L2 Boards’ spokeswoman Bethany Smithers. “With standup paddle boarding being the fastest growing water sport in the world, The Kewl Race provides a great opportunity for beginners and experienced athletes alike to give it a try alongside other great outdoor activities. Plus, we provide all the equipment and rental is included in the race registration fee.”

Participants in the second-annual Kewl Race on Saturday, June 15, will climb the rock wall under the historic Walnut Street Bridge. Then, they’ll take to the water by standup paddleboard to Maclellan Island where they’ll run a 1.8 mile trail loop, and finish off the challenge by paddle boarding back to the finish line. For an extra taste of adventure, there may also be an obstacle set up on the island during the trail run portion of the race. The first wave of racers will leave Coolidge Park at 8 a.m.

Sponsored by L2 Boards, this year’s race is a benefit for the Chattanooga Audubon Society, the local non-profit organization that maintains Maclellan Island as a wildlife sanctuary. With funds raised from the race, Audubon plans to add permanent restrooms to the island which will enable the area to host more events and programming.

“Maclellan Island is the last piece of urban wilderness in downtown,” said Audubon sanctuary manager Kyle Simpson. “You’re right in the middle of downtown, but you feel like you’re in the wilderness. It’s just a great place that we want to be able to share with more people.”

Participation in the Kewl Race costs $245 for teams or $85 for individuals, with kids’ individual entries at $35. Participants can register online at www.TheKewlRace.com no later than June 13.

The race will be timed and the top three racers in each category will be awarded.
