A telephone pole suddenly snapped near the Chief John Ross House in Rossville early Thursday afternoon. Two long arcing sounds after the pole broke sounded like transformers blowing.

The 1:20 p.m. incident by the duck pond sent several people who had been enjoying the ducks scurrying from the area.

Larry Rose, longtime overseer for the historic house, said a car had hit the same pole approximately a week ago during a police chase. He said that weakened the pole and it finally snapped.
