UTC Mocs Scrimmage - Highs and Lows

19 Days to Season Opener

Saturday, August 10, 2013 - by B.B. Branton

"The effort today was pretty good, but we are in practice No.13 and too many coaches are spending time correcting the way you are lining up and that's not acceptable."

-- UTC Head Football Coach Russ Huesman at the end of Saturday's scrimmage

The Good - Red Bank grad Keon Williams (9 carries, 60 yards) ran hard from the running back slot as did true freshman Derrick Craine from the fullback spot ... Willams had two nice catches out of the backfield from Jacob Huesman and a 30 yard run late in the practice.

Receiver Xavier Borishade (another true freshman) and All-American tight end Faysal Shafaat (good catch over the middle) had touchdown receptions ... Jacob Huesman threw both TDs ... The X-Man beat his defender on an out route and sprinted down the sideline 37 yards to pay dirt.

Learning to Adjust: The X-Man ( today - 5 catches, 60 yards, I TD) has been consistent in practice and wants to be able to contribute to the offense.

"I can adjust to the speed of the game, but the complexity of the game, the complex plays, is the biggest adjustment for me from high school to college."

Defensive linemen Derrick Lott (2), Toyvian Brand and Josh Freeman had quarterback sacks, while T.J. Jenkins (another true frosh) had an interception.

The Bad - "It's absolutely ridiculous that you are not lining up correctly," coach Russ Huesman told his players at the end of practice. "I can handle some physical mistakes, but we are in practice 13 and we are not lining up properly and having too many penalties because of it."

The Bad II - The Kicking Game  - Coach Huesman scolded both kickers - Nick Pollard and Heinrique Ribeiro -  for have a sub par day ... Pollad missed two field goals and an extra point, but converted on a 32 yarder late in practice ... Ribeiro missed a 48 yard field goal early, but converted an extra point and field goal from 35.

Coaches Comments

Adam Braithwaite, Defensive Coordinator ... I expected them to play hard which they did and line up correctly which they did not all the time ... little mistakes that we have to clean up ... you get beat making mistakes.

Jeff Durden, Offensive Coordinator ...

"Fullback Derrick Craine (true freshman) ran hard as No. 1 fullback Taharin Tyson sat out today ... Keon Williams ran well out of the No.1 back spot ... it's good that he and Marquis Green challenge each other every day for the No.1 spot ..."

" we were not as sharp as I would have liked ... played hard and moved the ball well early ... ".

Russ Huesman, Head Coach ...

"Our protection for our quarterbacks was below average ... Jacob had no time to pass down field ... the front four had a good pass rush and were getting to Jacob too much."

Roy Exum: ‘Let Me Be Clear’

I have seen a lot of human beings who have gotten themselves in terrible messes in my time and more self-induced agony than I want to recall. Will Rogers famously said, “Give a man enough rope and he’ll hang himself.” That’s the truth and if you ever didn’t think that “Politics corrupts,” consider the genius behind the line, “It ain’t long those who get elected … begin to think ...
