Main Street, which was pretty dead until a revival in recent years, has gotten so congested that the City Council voted Tuesday night to lower the speed limit.
Councilman Chris Anderson said there are now many more pedestrians and cars in the stretch between Broad Street and Central Avenue. He said it is difficult to turn left onto Main Street from the south side because of all the traffic.
For that section, the speed limit was lowered from 35 mph to 30 mph.
It was already 30 mph on the other side of Broad Street.
It remains 35 mph on the other side of Central Avenue headed toward Missionary Ridge.
