Burks UMC Announces New Wednesday Night Opportunities

Burks United Methodist Church, 6433 Hixson Pike, announced its new Wednesday Night Discipleship opportunities, beginning next Wednesday. The traditional dinner will be offered at a cost of $7 for adults and $3 for children. Serving will be available from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Reservations may be made through the church office at 842-4219. 

A Fall Gathering series will be in the Gym/Activity Center beginning at 6:30 p.

m. with appetizers served until 7:30, with a cost of $5. The adult series will be addressing some of our culture's most controversial issues. The topic next Wednesday will be "Unfairness of Heaven." The Youth Ministry program will have prayer time, games and a lesson series on Character led by Jim Gilbertson and Dan Boland.

Government Paid Almost $181,000 In Social Security Benefits To Sewanee Man After He Died In 1988; Hawkins Charged With Embezzlement

The Social Security Administration paid almost $181,000 in benefits to a Sewanee man after he died in 1988, federal prosecutors said. The government learned in 2014 that the money designated to Walter Acton was going to a man living in his home at 3932 Jump Off Road - Edward Hawkins.
