Pending City Council approval, the city plans to apply for a federal grant that would pay for 29 new firefighters.

The application is for a 2013 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the amount of $1,935,180.

It would pay salaries and benefits for two years.
