Officers Involved In Brainerd Shooting On Leave; Police Say Roberts Was Not Involved In Robbery At Nail Salon; Await Autopsy Report To See If Officers Shot Robber

Monday, August 19, 2013

The Chattanooga Police officers involved in the shooting at the Economy Inn on Saturday night were Kristoffer Tinney, Zachary Moody and Steven Meador.

All three officers are currently on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.

The officer who was struck in the forehead by the suspect was not directly involved in the shooting, so his name is not being released at this time.

Chattanooga Police said they have determined that 46-year-old Darryl Roberts was not involved in the robbery of a nail salon on Brainerd Road on Saturday night.

He was initially a suspect and was placed in a patrol car. That car was commandeered by the man police said carried out the robbery, Antonio Sheffield, 36, of Gulfport, Miss.

Darryl Roberts was then taken on a wild ride in which Sheffield got the police car up to 120 miles per hour and finally ran it through a fence just off an I-75 exit at Dalton.

Police said they are still awaiting the autopsy report from the Medical Examiner’s Office in Georgia to determine if Sheffield was shot by police during the altercation on Brainerd Road following the robbery.

Sheffield exchanged gunfire with officers before taking off in the cruiser.

Police said he took his own life by shooting himself in the head at the end of the chase.

Roy Exum: Vin Scully’s Last Time

It is said that the opening paragraph of my favorite ode to baseball should be the centerpiece for the canon of sports literature. It was written by former commissioner Bart Giamatti in "The Green Fields of the Mind,” a most marvelous essay to the last day of the regular season in the major leagues. “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in ... (click for more)
