Backpack Blessing, Rally Day At St. Timothy's Episcopal Sunday

Thursday, August 22, 2013

The blessing of the backpacks will return this year during the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday, at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 630 Mississippi Ave., Signal Mountain. All students are encouraged to bring their backpacks to church for a back to school blessing. Kids will be given a special memento from the blessing to remind them that God's love is always with them.

Rally Day will follow the service with food, water slides, dunk tank and snow cones. Everyone is invited. Kids bring your swim suits.

There will be fun for all ages. There will be an old fashioned Dinner on the Grounds with Champy's Fried Chicken, green beans, potato salad and cakes from Southern Star. There is no charge for this event. Jumpy houses will be set up for the younger kids to play outside. Don't forget your lawn chairs or blankets.

Steve Ellison: My Country

As I write on July 4 th /Independence Day, I wonder about myself and my fellow countrymen.  We seem ready to declare any kind of behavior as acceptable, even worthy of celebration.  For decades, we have turned a blind eye toward adultery, unethical business practices, fornication, mistreatment of the weak, pornography, failure to discipline children, no-fault divorce, ... Iwo Jima Veteran Paul George - A Vessel Of Service

He takes the question as a cue to produce a small piece of paper from inside a small ... (click for more)

Could The Marriage Decision Spark A New Independence Day?

I confess that this year I am having a hard time with the idea of celebrating the 4th of July Independence Day. It is not because I am not thankful to God for what was done on that day, what it represents, and the blessings I’ve experienced that flow from it. On the other hand, I want to think that maybe this year’s celebration will mark a period in our history in which a new movement ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: The Hay Fields Of July

Oh my goodness, July has just arrived and during my formative years, it was the most hated month of the year. When I was 12 years old, my wonderful grandfather decreed the days of begging for money to go to the picture show and burgers at the Krystal were over, that I was on the payroll for a dollar an hour and, in our family, folks worked for what they spent. Now my grandfather, ... (click for more)
