They had a 90-minute weather delay at the beginning of the game, but East Hamilton and Signal Mountain were able to get there game in and it turned out to be much closer than last year's 55-14 romp by the Hurricanes.
East Hamilton won this year's season opener by a 14-12 final, but it took a blocked field goal in the final minute to save the day for the Hurricanes.
"We overcame a lot of adversity, starting with the weather, but we got a break on a muffed punt in the first quarter and were able to take advantage of our opportunity," said East Hamilton coach Ted Gatewood after the game ended.
Matt Milita had a 13-yard touchdown run with 4:29 to play in the first quarter for the first score of the game and Casey Malone's PAT made it 7-0. The Eagles had fumbled a punt, which set up the three-play drive.
It was still 7-0 at halftime.
Chris Moore recovered an East Hamilton fumble late in the third quarter at the Hurricane 35. Seven plays and a 15-yard penalty later, the Eagles got on the board when Jack Teeter hooked up with Diamez Franklin on a 25-yard TD pass. The conversion pass was incomplete and the difference was 7-6 with 10:43 to play.
The Hurricanes didn't waste any time answering as Tre Herndon took the kickoff and raced 90 yards untouched up the middle and the difference was 14-6 following Malone's second PAT.
"He's a 100-meter sprinter on our track team and that always helps," Gatewood commented on the kickoff return.
The Eagles weren't ready to toss in the white towel and had a comeback of their own following the East Hamilton kickoff.
Bullish James McClellan IV scored from the 10 with 6:01 to play. Again, the Eagles elected to go for two, but the conversion run was stopped short.
East Hamilton was unable to get a first down and had an 11-yard loss on a bad snap exchange, forcing a Hurricane punt with just under five minutes to play.
Taking possession at their own 45 with more than enough time, Signal Mountain drove down field to the 20, but a 36-yard field goal attempt by Houston McLain was blocked by Herndon with 37 seconds to play to seal the win for East Hamilton.
The Hurricanes will be at home next Friday to host Dobyns-Bennett while Signal Mountain will be at home again to host the Tyner Rams.
