For half a century, since its creation in 1963 by John Brock, Jr. and Marie Davis, Brock Insurance Agency has maintained a business model of building relationships to understand and appreciate the businesses of each client the agency serves.
Today, President Mark Brock and Senior VP, Secretary and Treasurer Dana Davis lead Brock Insurance Agency, a business established by their parents 50 years ago this year.
“Over the last 50 years, the insurance industry has gone through a tremendous transformation, but the successful sustainability of our business has and will never change,” said Mark Brock, president of BIA. “It’s the value we put in our relationships with our clients that has made our business. My father and brother Paul were so instrumental in teaching all of us this.”
Throughout the agency’s life, business has been kept in the family, with Marie’s son, Dana Davis, joining the agency in 1969 and John’s sons, Paul and Mark Brock, coming on board in the early eighties. Recently, third-generation family members, Ramsey Brock and Keith Davis, have also joined the business, which was led by John Brock from 1963-1983 and by Paul Brock from 1983-2008.
John Brock and Marie Davis made a clear impression on their children at an early age of how to properly run a business, officials said. Both Mark Brock and Dana Davis recall their parents being passionate about their business and their clients. Hand-delivering policies, the annual Christmas party and inviting everyone to fish fries and barbecues at the company’s farm in Naomi, Ga. are a few examples of the personal touches both John and Marie felt necessary in developing close client relationships.
“Clients were always a part of our parents’ personal lives,” said Dana Davis, senior vice president, secretary and treasurer of BIA. “They were friends first and clients second, and over the last half century, we have maintained that standard and continue to conduct business that way.”
Although the basics have remained the same throughout the years at Brock Insurance, the company has evolved over time to expand into new markets. BIA began offering health and life insurance coverage in 1998, when DeFo Spencer spearheaded a newly-formed division, Brock & Spencer Benefits. Overall, the agency offers coverage from 57 insurance carriers in the areas of surety, commercial, personal lines and benefits and is licensed in all 50 states, which gives customers the ability to grow their businesses throughout the country without insurance constraints.
Employees of the agency have always understood the importance of philanthropically giving back to the communities in which they work. In Hamilton and Walker counties alone, they have supported local organizations including the Greater Chattanooga YMCA, Associated General Contractors, Boys and Girls Club of Chattanooga, Chattanooga Association of Life Underwriters, Society of Financial Service Professionals, National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, Home Builders Association, Insurors of Chattanooga, State Insurors of Tennessee, Independent Insurance Agents of America, and LAUNCH Chattanooga.
Today, Mark Brock, Dana Davis and the entire staff continue to work to maintain regional preeminence in the insurance industry, officials said. In the past 50 years, BIA, now with a client list of more than 1,400, has sustained a steady trajectory of growth.
“I am so proud of our history, our clients and our staff,” said Mark Brock. “Our goal is for the agency to be doing the exact same things we’re doing now in another 50 years.”
