Officers working at the Hamilton County Jail quickly picked up an escape attempt by Kenneth Burnum, who was posing as another inmate set to be released, on Monday at approximately 4:50 p.m.
When officers went to the holding cell and called the name of the inmate who was set to be released, inmate Burnum stepped up claiming to be him. He then signed two bonds and the property sheet belonging to the other inmate and was moved over to Central Control. Officers there doing the final identity verification process before release discovered the actual inmate who was set for release was a black male and Kenneth Burnum is a white male.
Officials said, "The training and diligence by the officers working in the jail certainly eliminated the possibility of the wrong person being released."
Burnum was charged with criminal impersonation and attempted escape.
