Noted contemporary sculptor and conceptual and visual artist Willie Cole will speak as part of the Hunter Museum of American Art’s ArtWise speakers series on Thursday at 6 p.m.
He is best known for his appropriation of domestic objects such as irons, high-heeled shoes, wooden matches and bicycle parts, while adding a metaphorical twist.
Mr. Cole’s body of work delves into issues of race in America as seen in the recent Hunter acquisition, Stowage. This piece incorporates his use of the iron motif as a representation of slave trade ships.
Mr. Cole’s work can be seen in exhibitions and public art installations around the world including New York City and Sao Paula, Brazil.
