County School Board Chairman Mike Evatt announced Monday that he plans to make a race for Circuit Court clerk.
He plans to run in the Republican primary for the seat being vacated by veteran clerk Paula Thompson, who is not seeking re-election.
County Commission Chairman Larry Henry said earlier he is seriously considering running for the post. He has called a press conference for Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the County Courthouse.
Mr. Evatt is the son of the late H.Q. Evatt, former county sheriff.
He had a career in the county school maintenance department and is in the contracting business.
Mr. Evatt said, "It is with a sincere desire to continue to serve the people of Hamilton County that I am announcing my candidacy for the office of Circuit Court Clerk. I firmly believe my tenure as a member and current chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Education has been productive and has contributed to the growth of a school system that is poised to meet the challenges of preparing our young people for the future.
"I now propose to apply that same mindset of service leadership and management skills to this position. Public Service at any level has unique requirements that are non-negotiable in order to ensure a job well done. I believe that my management experiences, communication skills, and leadership abilities have prepared me to successfully meet the requirements of this office and to therefore be a viable candidate for the office of Circuit Court Clerk.."
