Sheriff Jim Hammond said a safety assessment of all county schools is nearing completion.
He said School Resource Officers are making the study of the more than 70 schools in the system.
They are looking at such items as entrances and exits, locks and security systems, he said.
Sheriff Hammond said one outgrowth of the study will be recommendations for adding safety features to new county schools that are built.
He said, "We are asking that in new schools that a lot more attention be paid to passive security."
