With the field awash in PINK in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team battled it out on the field to a 2-1 loss to Georgia Southern Sunday morning at Finley Stadium.
With the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure slated to begin and end at Finley Stadium, the Mocs moved up their Southern Conference matchup to accommodate the fundraising event.
Chattanooga scored first when sophomore Clare Latham (Cordova, Tenn.) slotted a pass in to classmate Loryn Queen (Lanesville, Ind.) who sent the shot into the right side to give UTC a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
While Chattanooga fought hard and battled, Georgia Southern proved too much with a pair of second half goals. In the 51st minute Cori Dulmage crossed a shot over to teammate Alex Murphy for the equalizer.
Both teams possessed the ball well and had many opportunities to score. Senior keeper Taylor Mangrum (Franklin, Tenn.) made a couple of quick saves off shots from 10 yards out to keep Chattanooga in the contest. However, Georgia Southern’s Nora El-Shami shot home the game winner off a pass from teammate Jennifer Wittick at the 80:31 mark of the game.
The Eagles outshot UTC 21-9 and UTC keeper Mangrum made nine saves with six in the second half. Junior Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) had a team-best four shots while sophomore Skylar Brewer () had two.
More than 3,000 people wearing pink filled the stands at Finley Stadium in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure started from Finley Stadium at 2 p.m. and ended at midfield. Survivors as well as friends and family were on hand for the annual event.
