CAHA Presents Talk by Dr. Ralph Hood October 14

Monday, September 30, 2013

The Chattanooga Area Historical Association will present Dr. Ralph Hood and a look into the world of serpent handling in Appalachia.

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. —Mark 16:17-18

For serpent-handling churches, these verses hold no symbolism—they are the literal words of the Lord that have inspired worshiping believers to handle poisonous snakes for a hundred years.  Dr. Hood is co-author of “Them That Believe: The Power and Meaning of the Christian Serpent-Handling Tradition” and “Handling Serpents: Pastor Jimmy.”

Come hear from one of the nation’s foremost experts on this unique religious tradition.

The program will be held at 6pm on Monday, October 14 in the Community Room of the Electric Power Board building downtown.   Attendees should enter on the Broad Street/MLK corner of the building.

Remembering The UT Student Aquatic Center

A good friend sent me John Shearer's recent article on the Student Aquatic Center. It brought back many memories. I graduated from Baylor in 1969 and first swam in the Aquatic Center in 1968 when the high school state meet was resumed for the first time in many years. I still remember being awed by the facility. I was fortunate enough to be recruited by Coach Bussard ... (click for more)

Repeal Obamacare, Congressman Fleischmann - And Response (2)

Chuck: I'm writing to express my strong opposition to the plan that is being rolled out by Paul Ryan to replace Obamacare. Roy Exum: You, The Bald-Headed Lady

You were wearing a pretty sweat shirt and blue jeans when I saw you outside the Infusion Center at Erlanger Hospital on Wednesday. You were the one who was nearly bald and I was the guy you greeted with a huge smile as we said hello in passing. You reminded me exactly of my brother Franklin. Years ago when chemotherapy began to rob him of his hair, Franklin was pretty devastated ... (click for more)
