The city of Chattanooga has decided not to buy the Harriet Tubman site from the Chattanooga Housing Authority.
Mayor Andy Berke said earlier the city planned to spend $1 million on the purchase and then redevelop the site.
He said Monday, “Through our ongoing discussions with the Chattanooga Housing Authority (CHA), I have decided to withdraw the city's bid to purchase the site as the purchase price would have well exceeded the amount of funds allocated in the FY2014 budget.
"It is clear that CHA will accept the highest bid, which is an amount beyond what we are willing to pay. While I believe this project would have greatly improved East Chattanooga, local government must act in the most responsible way possible with taxpayer dollars.”
