UTC Defeats Georgia State, 42-14

Huesman Has Two Touchdown Passes

ATLANTA - Taking a page from Union Army General William Sherman during the Civil War, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman and his Moc teammates marched through the Georgia Dome Saturday afternoon in defeating host Georgia State (0-2) 42-14.

FBS Win: The Mocs improve to 1-1 on the season and recorded their first win against a FBS opponent in nearly 30 years, having beaten Southwestern Louisiana, 9-7, at home in 1984.

Huesman passed for 84 yards (9-13) and two touchdowns and rushed for 84 yards and two more scores.

Junior running back Keon Williams (Red Bank HS) rushed for a career-high 147 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. He opened the Mocs scoring on a 2-yard run at 9:28 of the first quarter.

"The guys on our offensive line stayed on their blocks and really locked on to people which gave our backs room to run," said Huesman.

"And this was the best I have seen Keon run. We all played with plenty of excitement and energy today."

Freshman Derrick Craine had 53 yards on six carrires and a score, Terrell Robinson gained 47 yards on four carries and Marquis Green added 43 yards on nine carries.

In a complete dominance on both sides of the ball, the Mocs outgained the Panthers 509-303 in total offense and allowed only 70 yards from the high-octane passing attack through three quarters and 273 for the game.

"I thought we played well in all three phases of the game, offense, defense and special teams," said UTC coach Russ Huesman.

"We ran the ball really well as our backs delivered some shots and our offensive line gave the backs lots of running room."

Rushing Yards For And Against:

UTC's 401 rushing yards are the most by a Mocs offense since 404 yards in a 49-14 win against VMI  Oct.15, 1994 at Chamberlain Field.

Ga. State's 30 rushing yards are the fewest against a UTC team has allowed since East Tenn. State had minus seven yards rushing in a 33-10 Mocs win in 1988.

"I don't need to look at the stats," said  Ga. State coach Trent Miles. "I saw it on the field. They were the much better football team today.

"They dominated from the very beginning and our young men did not compete very well."

Huesman (Baylor School) connected with All-American tight end Faysal Shafaat on scoring tosses of 27 and nine yards in the second quarter for a 210 lead and then ran for two more in the third to make it 35-0. Freshman Derrick Craine closed out the Mocs scoring with a four yard run at 14:56 of the fourth quarter.

Nick Pollard converted all six extra point attempts.

Ga. State points came on a pair of Ben McLane to Albert Wison touchdowns pass plays for 5 and 30 yards in the fourth quarter.

The dressed-in-all-white Mocs led 42-0 before the Panthers scored twice in the fourth quarter after coach Huesman had pulled his starters.

Cell Phones And Roundabouts

I read the article written by Chris Morgan about the use of cell phones in vehicles and the Chattanooga Roundabouts. Cell phone use in vehicles especially in crisis intersection situations is extremely dangerous. I also agree with his assessment about the roundabouts. One problem I see with roundabouts is that on the two-lane roundabouts where they are coming in from ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Two Wrongs Not Right

Scottie Mayfield is a delightful friend of mine but he’s the last guy in the world who should be aiming at anybody’s character. He’s always had class but today Scottie is the “star” of a shameful political commercial in which he assails challenger Weston Wamp on behalf of a panicked Chuck Fleischmann. Mayfield, you’ll remember, ran against the two in the last race for the District ... (click for more)
