J. David Bishop Named Police Chief For Cleveland

Cleveland City Manager Janice Casteel on Friday announced that she has selected the new leader of the Cleveland Police Department. J. David Bishop will serve as the police chief.

Chief Bishop is a 30-year veteran of the Cleveland Police Department. He worked as an undercover narcotics officer from 1984-1987 and then worked on patrol for five years, eventually becoming a field training officer. In 1992, he was transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division as a detective where he worked for three years. In 1995, Mr. Bishop was promoted to operations sergeant, overseeing a team of officers working patrol. He was promoted several years later to the Training Division as lieutenant and then later transferred to work as lieutenant over the Criminal Investigations Division. In 2008, Mr. Bishop was promoted to captain of operations where he has served until being promoted to chief of police.

Throughout his career at the Cleveland Police Department, Mr. Bishop received various awards such as Detective of the Year, Officer of the Year and Supervisor of the Year. He also received awards for safe driving, team work, good conduct and meritorious service. One of the hallmarks of his career was in 2000, when Mr. Bishop graduated from the FBI National Academy Class #200. Mr. Bishop has also served as a law enforcement officer at the Albany Police Department in Georgia and the Knoxville Police Department.

Mr. Bishop holds an Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice with honors from Cleveland State Community College. He is married to Karen with whom he shares two children, Andy Cannon and Amy Cantrell (Scott Cantrell, son-in-law). He is the grandfather to Madi, 14, and Cooper, 6.

City Manager Casteel said, "l am confident that Chief Bishop will continue to lead a progressive department. His strong leadership abilities will strengthen the accountability within the Cleveland Police Department and I look forward to working with him to achieve his goals for the department."

Chief Bishop's oath of office will be administered by Mayor Rowland on Monday at the 3 p.m. formal session of the City Council, which will be held in the Cleveland Municipal Building at 190 Church Street N.E. Cleveland.
