Government Has A Duty To Step Up When Common Sense Flies Out The Window

Thursday, January 16, 2014
Roy,

The federal government has an obligation and a duty to step in when already stupid rules and laws are taken to the extreme and folks get blood thirsty. Otherwise, "strange fruit" would still be hanging from poplar trees, bridge rafters and who knows where else all over the south.

Such strict policies is actually a leading cause of violence, students dropping out, anti-social behavior and students performing poorly and below grade level at school.

If schools used common sense when enforcing zero tolerance rules there would have been no need for federal intervention in the first place. However, they failed to do that. They got giddy, drunk with power and blood thirsty. The federal government should have taken action a long time ago. Once the damage is done, it's done..... the effects are permanent. There's no backtracking for the children already affected.

Such idiotic laws and rules aren't just affecting minority students either. They're affecting white students too. Minority and economically disadvantaged students just receive the brunt of such laws, because they're easier targets. There's the young 13-year-old female white student who was strip searched because the school thought she was hiding ibuprofen in her underwear (later, at the age of 19, and attending college/the Supreme Court ruled her rights had indeed been violated).

Then there was the 8-year-old student who was suspended for biting his pop tart, shaping it to look like a gun. Or the 5 or 6-year-old (white) kindergartner or first grader who was suspended for  shaping his fingers in the appearance of a gun--then running around on the playground shouting "pow!" "pow!" We use to call that playing cowboys.

The white female student who was arrested for vandalism, placed in handcuffs, escorted from the classroom in front of fellow classmates when she wrote "OK" on her desk.

Or the Texas female student (white or white Latino) who was arrested and suspended (or maybe she was expelled/can't remember) when she sprayed perfume on herself after several incidence of bullying and taunting by both teacher and fellow students with "you smell!" Or "You stink!"

These are just minor samplings in comparison to what's been taking place in schools all across the nation under zero policy standards. America should be concerned with the impact such policies will have on present and future generations if they're not reigned in, creating even more violent and anti-social generations.

Children are being suspended and even arrested for "flatulence" in class. Yes, "farting." As someone jokingly stated: "When farting is outlawed, only outlaws will fart."

Yes, as in most all bad laws when enforced, the minority population usually feels the brunt of such laws. However, those laws have a tendency to not remain in their assigned containers and targets. At some point they jump out and affect the unintended too.

Using a black man to prop up your argument doesn't fly. School fights date back to Biblical times. School fights were an almost daily occurrence between white students at the predominately white school my sons once attended. They were just downplayed because most of the students, teachers and staff were either related or friends, and came from a closely knit community. Even students showing up at school stoned, drunk, with weapons weren't frowned upon or reported. However, the school did attempt to suspend a bus load of black students when the bus arrived late once.

Surely, you know and I know, you had a few "wild child" siblings in your own family. If not for family name, standing in the community and family connections, who knows.. One of'em, at least, might've made his way right up there with the "worst of the worst" list.

Allen West is not the spokesperson for black people. Just like you're not the spokesperson for all white people. You just use him because black people like him talk the language people like you enjoy hearing. You think it makes you appear less bias and intolerant. It doesn't. If you want to argue a point, then stand like a man and fight your own battles. Hiding behind someone else to support your argument just because they're of the same ethnic or racial class is so weak, shallow and base.

Dennis Norwood: Mr. President, Put Down Your Fiddle. Rome Is Burning

It would appear as if our president has all but given up - not only on his presidency - but on governing at all. With crisis after crisis at every turn there is no late night candle burning in the White House. Instead that candle is lighting the way for a series of fundraising events. This, my friends, scares me. Not as a Republican or Democrat, but as an American. Mr. ... (click for more)
