Hixson Wrestlers Edge East Ridge, 31-27

It was a Hixson-East Ridge battle from the 1970s.

Two tradition-rich wrestling programs went at it at Hixson Tuesday night with two tie scores and four lead changes and it came down to the final match.

With the fans from both schools cheering to the end, Hixson’s Ronnie Huff posted a major decision against Jayln Allen worth four team points and a 31-27 team victory.

Huff scored a takedown at the first and end of the opening period, plus an escape to lead 5-4.

Allen gained a tie at 5-5 with a second period escape, but Huff then turned it on with 12 straight points for a major decision to clinch the team triumph.

“Hats off to East Ridge for wrestling a solid match and we came out flat,” said Hixson coach Garrick Hall who now has 199 career wins. “I knew at weigh-ins that they were ready and we weren’t.  They fought off their backs in certain matches, but we were able to come back in the final two matches.”

Starting at 152 with a technical fall by Hixson’s Landon Goforth (5 team points), the Wildcats won four of the first six matches for a 19-6 lead.

The Pioneers then won five of the next six matches to lead 27-22 with two matches remaining.

Hixson then secured the win with a technical fall by Joe Stegall ,followed by Huff’s major decision.

“It was an exciting match, I thought we wrestled well, but Hixson won some big matches at the end,” said East Ridge coach Chris Bird.
