Alva Jean Gates, 78, of Cleveland, TN, died on Thursday night, January 23, 2014 in a local hospital surrounded by her family.
Alva was born here on December 8, 1935, a daughter of the late Earl and Genoa Barrett. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Clingan Ridge Baptist Church. Alva worked for many years and had retired from the Charleston Hosiery Company.
In addition to her parents, Alva was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis “Dink” Gates; one sister, Mary Ruth Pullin; and one brother, J. B. Barrett.
Alva is survived by four children, Randy Gates and his wife Patricia, Susie Gates Frey, Tim Gates and his wife Donna and Tyra Gates; nine grandchildren, Lindsey Gates Paturalski, Nichole Scott, Matthew Wagner, Adam Gates, Lisa Gates, Cody Gates, Seth Robinette, Garrin McBryar and Paige Robinette; six great grandchildren Hailee Gates, Ashlyn Gates, Balin Gates, Quintin Scott, Haley Wagner and Matthew Wagner II; one great-great-grandchild, Jaston Welch; and numerous other family members, church family and special friends.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 25 from 4-6 p.m. at the Clingan Ridge Baptist Church located at 2412 Georgetown Road NW in Cleveland, TN.
A graveside service and interment beside Alva’s late husband is planned for Sunday, January 26 at 2 p.m. in the Samples Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Adam Gates officiating.
