Firefighters Respond To 2 Duplex Fires Monday Morning

Monday, January 27, 2014

Chattanooga firefighters battled two duplex fires Monday morning.

Firefighters rushed to a reported duplex fire at 5:46 at 6034 Arlena Circle. The fire was in the “B” side of the duplex.

Battalion Chief Steve Swanson said firefighters with four fire companies quickly attacked the fire and got it under control in just a few minutes. In doing so, they were able to contain the fire damage to one room and its contents. The rest of the duplex on both sides had some smoke damage. The loss was estimated at $10,000.

The resident in the “B” side told firefighters that she woke up and saw flames. She immediately got out and called 911. Fortunately, her daughter was not home at the time.

Chief Swanson said the cause of the fire appeared to be accidental, most likely from an electrical malfunction. Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee were called in to provide assistance to the mother and her daughter.

The second fire was at 1314 Mayfield Lane around 7:30 a.m.

Captain Scott Pell with Squad 19 said the fire appeared to have started around the back door, and was beginning to penetrate into the exterior wall. The firefighters were able to get the fire out in less than 10 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Captain Pell estimated the loss at $3,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
