Ready For A New Sheriff - And Response

Monday, January 06, 2014

The election season has certainly begun and the Sheriff's race seems to be front and center. I don't wish to publicly endorse anyone but I am a Republican and will vote in the  May Republican Primary.

Putting politics aside I'm ready for a different Sheriff. In the past few years my mouth has dropped to the floor when the current Sheriff made statements about a post Civil War slave rebellion and white people being scared because of a black President. Are we really still living with that mentality? Sheriff Hammond, most people have put those feelings behind them. A person's race is not the issue. And sending our youth to the funeral home is not the solution. Our youth are in the streets and not in church. They have a gang of thugs for a family but no mom and dad. I hoped you as the Sheriff would stand as a leader and work with community leaders to present solutions; you have not.

It looks like one other candidate is in the race and possibly two. There's still time for even more to jump in but with the deadline weeks away I doubt that will occur. I'll look at the other candidate or candidates and decide who to cast my vote for. I know I will vote for a different Sheriff.

Joan Webb,

I find it very interesting that you can point out a major problem we have in society today but someone we hired through the election process to fix it must remain silent. "Our youth are in the streets and not in church" as well as "They have a gang of thugs for a family, but no mom and dad," hit the nail on the head.

Our fine sheriff puts the word out that he is going to go after them and all of a sudden he is a raciest? Give me a break lady. What do you want him to do, ask the men to man up and go home and raise their children and abide by a family structure that makes for a better society? Since Sheriff Hammond is white I guess you're saying this only applies to African American citizens. If so, you are dead wrong. It's across the board and nothing will ever get fixed with your attitude.  This is not the time or place to play the "race card."

"A person's race is not the issue." You said it and I agree, but I wonder why you made it just that. Remember how our former sheriff, Billy Long, dealt with the race other than his. He worked with one man (of a different race) to help the flow of drugs while extorting other races (other than his) to sell protection. That doesn't work well for me.

Sheriff Jim Hammond is a stand up guy and has done a lot to improve our Hamilton County Sheriff's Department. He has my vote and I hope that anyone who wants a sheriff that will not tolerate crime will vote to re-elect Sheriff Jim Hammond.
