Larry McWhorter, 68, of Chickamauga, GA, died Tuesday, September 30, 2014.
Larry was born on May 9, 1946 to the late William Cecil and Nettie Louise McWhorter. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served two terms in Vietnam. While in the Navy he trained at the Naval Damage Control Training Center where he became a certified fire fighter. After serving his country Larry worked at E.T. Barwick Mill, Salem Carpet, and the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in LaFayette. Larry then went to work at Covenant Transport where he retired as a supervisor over the truck wash department. He is a member of the Community Baptist Church on Lee Mason Road, where he was a deacon for 9 years. He loved his church family dearly. Larry was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Rev. Linus McWhorter.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Shirley McKeehan McWhorter, of Chickamauga; sons, DeWayne McWhorter and wife Bonnie of Chickamauga and Brian McWhorter and wife Amy, of Rossville; grandchildren, Jonathon McWhorter, Cody Bearden McWhorter, Dylan McWhorter and Kaytlyn McWhorter; sisters, Debra Morgan, of LaFayette and Dona McDaniel, of East Ridge; brother, Gary McWhorter and wife Debbie, of LaFayette; sister-in-law, Margaret McWhorter; and special friends, Richard and Ann Dobbins.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Tedd Scoggins, Dr. David Wendt and Amedisys Home Health.
Funeral will be from the Community Baptist Church, officiated by Lee Mason Road on Friday, October 3, at 2 p.m. with Rev. W.C. Pence, Rev. Billy Hampton, Rev. Joe Dodd and Richard Dobbins officiating. Interment will follow in the Chickamauga City Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers are Robert Wardlaw, Buster Wall, Jeff Davis, Michael Davis, Brad Denton and Hugh McKissick. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Wright, Dr. Tedd Scoggins, Orville Lowery, Virgil Bishop and the members of the Community Baptist Church.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday October, 1 from 6-9 p.m., Thursday, October 2 from 12-8 p.m. and Friday, October 3 from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
