UTC Soccer Falls 4-0 At Mud-Caked VMI

  • Sunday, October 12, 2014

The UTC women’s soccer team was unable to find its footing on a rainy Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to VMI in Southern Conference action at a muddy Patchin Field.

The Mocs outshot the Keydets 19-16 with a 5-2 advantage on corners, but couldn’t find the net despite seven shots on goal and one by senior Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) that bounded off the crossbar.

“The field definitely played to their advantage,” UTC head coach JD Kyzer said.

“They were very aggressive.”

VMI scored twice in the first half, one a penalty kick, and twice in the second that included a last minute goal to get its second league victory.

Mackezyk led the Mocs with five shots with two on goal and freshman McKenzie Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) managed to get off three shots. Senior Melanie Arredondo (Tampico, Mexico) found the goal twice, but both were saved before crossing the line.

Freshman keeper Hannah Dunn (Cookeville, Tenn.) made four saves on 15 shots faced and gave up four goals for the Mocs.

The Keydets’ Kristen Whitehurst scored twice with Emma Quirk and Myranda Emery each connecting for the other two. Sarah Putney assisted on two goals for VMI. Emily Marbury faced 19 shots and made seven saves.

“We had more opportunities to score today but the shots hit the mud and the sand and just stopped,” Kyzer said. “We had as many opportunities to score but we didn’t finish.”

Steady rains before and during the game made field conditions deplorable. Shots that had a chance to get past the keeper were slowed down by mud and large pockets of sand in front of the goals and, instead, became saves.

Chattanooga is 1-12-1 overall and 0-5 in SoCon play while the Keydets move to 3-10-1 on the year and 2-3 in league action. Chattanooga will remain on the road with a match Friday at Wofford and Sunday at Furman before returning home for its final two regular season matches.
