Hamilton County Schools Delayed 2 Hours Tuesday Due To Anticipated Severe Storms, Flash Floods

Due to the anticipated strong winds Monday evening, Hamilton County Schools will be delayed two hours Tuesday.

Officials said they would continue to monitor the conditions throughout the evening and will send an update if necessary.  

Child care will open on regular schedule. 

Bradley County Schools, Cleveland City Schools, Polk County Schools, Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy and Walker County, Ga., Schools will also be on a two-hour delay. St. Jude School will open at 10 a.m.

Dade County, Ga., Schools will be closed on Tuesday in anticipation of the storm.

The Chattanooga area is under a flood watch and also a warning for severe storms.

HEAVY RAINFALL POSSIBLE FROM EARLY TUESDAY THROUGH EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING OVER THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS AND EASTERN TENNESSEE VALLEY... .A STRONG STORM SYSTEM MOVING INTO THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY TONIGHT WILL SPREAD SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS INTO SOUTHEAST TENNESSEE LATE TONIGHT AND THEN SPREAD NORTHEAST DURING THE DAY TUESDAY AND CONTINUE TUESDAY EVENING OVER NORTHEAST TENNESSEE AND SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA. RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES AND ISOLATED AMOUNTS OF UP TO 6 INCHES HAVE MADE THE GROUND SATURATED SO ADDITIONAL HEAVY RAIN COULD CAUSE FLOODING OF LOW LYING AREAS...SMALL STREAMS AND URBAN AREAS.

A STRONG STORM SYSTEM AND ITS ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT WILL SLOWLY APPROACH THE REGION TONIGHT...BRINGING A STRONG SOUTHEASTERLY WIND FLOW OVER THE MOUNTAINS. STRONG WIND GUSTS ARE EXPECTED OVER THE MOUNTAINS AND THEIR ADJACENT FOOTHILLS TONIGHT INTO TUESDAY...WHERE A HIGH WIND WARNING IS IN EFFECT. A LINE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL ALSO APPROACH THE REGION LATE TONIGHT TOWARDS SUNRISE...WITH SOME OF THESE STORMS POSSIBLY BECOMING STRONG TO SEVERE NEAR THE CUMBERLAND PLATEAU. DAMAGING WINDS WILL BE THE PRIMARY THREAT...ALTHOUGH AN ISOLATED TORNADO CANNOT BE RULED OUT. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY... A COLD FRONT WITH A STRONG WIND FIELD WILL SLOWLY MOVE INTO THE AREA ON TUESDAY...BRINGING AN EXTENSIVE AREA OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAINFALL. DUE TO THE SLOW MOVEMENT OF THE COLD FRONT... FLOODING WILL BE A THREAT ON TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT. SOME STORMS ON TUESDAY MAY ALSO BECOME SEVERE WITH DAMAGING WINDS... AND AN ISOLATED TORNADO OR TWO WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE. STRONG WIND GUSTS WILL ALSO CONTINUE ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS AND THEIR ADJACENT FOOTHILLS ON TUESDAY.
