Building on the American heritage of Chautauqua, Chattanooga State will present the Chautauqua Series at 4 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month in the Kolwyck Library Mobile Classroom. The series is free and open to the public.
In 1874, people gathered on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in New York State to celebrate the first gathering and to enjoy speakers, teachers, musicians, and specialists who entertained and educated members of the community. Following this tradition, faculty members Joel Henderson, Ken Cardillo, Keri Lamb, Debbie Rudd, and Natalie Counts have brought together professors and practitioners who will offer members of the community a deeper glimpse into specialized topics in the field of Humanities.
According to one of the series organizers, Dr. Lamb, assistant professor of Humanities, “These interactive sessions range from informative talks and discussions to workshops where attendees can practice or experience a particular craft in a hands-on way. Topics extend across a variety of disciplines, including art, music, literature, and theatre, and take place monthly in a relaxed, collegial setting.”
The next scheduled presentation on Thursday is entitled “The Traditional Roots of American Popular Music.” Denis Kiely, associate professor of English, will offer this lively, interactive musical presentation.
Future offerings in the coming months include:
Nov. 20: “The Page is a Cold Bed,” featuring primarily contemporary poetry, presented by Associate Professor Bill Stifler
Feb. 19: “Why Violence Sells: An Inquiry Into the Compelling Nature of the Torn and Traumatized Body,” addressing the history of violent entertainment, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Keri Lamb
March 19: “Conquering Cape Town, South Africa,” highlighting Assistant Professor Rachael Falu’s real-life experiences teaching abroad in an unorthodox environment
April 16: Special session featuring Lila Quintero Weaver, author of Darkroom and Rick Bragg, author of All Over But The Shoutin’ as part of the Writers@Work program
