Mocs Volleyball Travels To Furman, Citadel

  • Wednesday, October 15, 2014
The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team looks to continue its four-match winning streak this weekend as it travels to South Carolina to take on both Furman and The Citadel.  UTC is 1-0 on the season against The Citadel while it is the first meeting of the year with Furman.

The Mocs are riding their longest winning streak since 2012, when they won four consecutive to close out the regular season.  Their longest streak before that came in 2007, winning seven in a row, which included five SoCon contests.

Sophomore Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) is coming off an outstanding two-win weekend, leading Chattanooga over Wofford and Mercer in 3-1 victories.
The outside hitter totaled 29 kills, 3.62 per set, while hitting .292 last week.  She currently ranks 15th in the nation in aces per set and second in the league.

Chattanooga sits in third place in the SoCon standings behind Samford and Furman.  UTC is 4-2 in the league with Samford and Furman undefeated at 6-0 and 5-0, respectively.  The Mocs have already surpassed their SoCon win total from a season ago.  The last time UTC won more than four conference matches in a season was 2012, collecting eight and its first trip to the league tournament since 2008.

Friday’s match is set for 6 p.m. in Greenville, S.C., taking on the 5-0 Paladins.  Furman took its only match of the week, a sweep of ETSU, Friday night. The win extended the Paladins’ home winning streak to 13 straight games, including 10 straight against conference opponents. Furman features one of the leagues deepest and most potent offenses, earning three straight offensive player of the week honors by three different players and leading the league in hitting percentage as a team.

Sophomore Annie Bierman was named the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week, collecting 12 kills against ETSU.  Her 4.00 kills per set and .500 hitting percentage helped lead the Paladins to a 3-0 win over the Bucs.  Team mate Ashton Gregory ranks sixth in the conference with a .311 hitting percentage and sixth in kills with 3.13 per set.  Gregory also leads the country with 29 solo blocks.

Saturdy’s 5 p.m. contest against The Citadel is the second meeting of the season between the two teams.  Chattanooga is 1-0 on the season, claiming a 3-0 win Oct. 3, and 22-0 all-time against the Bulldogs.  The Citadel is winless in league action, thus far, standing at 0-6.

Setter Rachel Keefer ranks fifth in the conference with 9.04 assists per set, totaling 633 on the season.  Senior team mate Amanda Rudnik leads the Bulldog defense with 241 digs, averaging 3.30 per set.
