AGC Student Chapter Plans CDC Outdoor Garden Classroom

  • Thursday, October 2, 2014

The Associated General Contractors Student Chapter plans to build three child-size potting tables, an outdoor storage shelving unit and a build picnic table around an existing tree for the outdoor garden classroom at the Child Development Center on campus.

"To develop their critical thinking skills, chapter members met directly with the clients (CDC staff), created and reviewed the plans, prepared a material list, discussed material acquisition, divided up labor, and proposed a schedule … just as they would in a real job situation," officials said.

AGC Student Chapter is a student-led organization comprised of students in construction-related programs of study. They support the mission to “lead and improve the professional construction industry with Skill, Integrity, and Responsibility” through promoting these values in coursework, club activities, the work done at Chattanooga State and in the surrounding community. The chapter partners with AGC of East Tennessee and AGC of America to deliver quality services, leadership, and expertise to members.

Twice named Student Club of the Year in 2010-11 and 2013-14, this year’s club is led by Bill Murray, president; Brandon Harrison, vice-president; and Joseph Mazurek, secretary. Faculty advisors include Caitlin Moffitt, assistant professor of civil and construction engineering technology and Dan Wood, assistant professor of design and drafting engineering technology.
