William “Bill” B. Martin, Jr., 88, of Chattanooga, died peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2014 surrounded by his family at his home. 

A native of Knoxville, he attended Georgia Tech on the GI Bill.  After serving a short time in the United States Navy, while at Georgia Tech he was elected president of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.  Upon his graduation in 1948, he came to Chattanooga to take an Electrical Engineering job with TVA.  Bill worked at several locations across Tennessee from Memphis to Johnson City before returning to Chattanooga in 1963. He retired in 1988, after 40 years of service.  Bill was a Registered Professional Engineer in Tennessee. 

He was active in civic clubs.  Bill was a scout master in two cities, a member of Kiwanis Clubs in two cities, and a member of the Central High School Booster Club where he helped build the football stadium, track and baseball field.  He also served as treasurer of the Central High PTA.  Bill was a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church. 

Bill was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed until we join him again.  The family would like to say a special thanks to the many family and friends who have provided support for him and his family. 

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 31 years, Elizabeth Sertel Martin.

Bill is survived by his wife of 23 years, Betty Knight Martin; two sons, David (Susan) Martin of Canton, Ga., and Roger (Susan) Martin of Goodlettsville, Tn.; daughter, Dianne (Eileen) Martin of Tucker, Ga.; five grandchildren, Rachel (Jeff) Hartwell, Andrew Martin, Jessica Martin, Christopher Martin, and Katherine Martin.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, and from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

A celebration of life service for Bill will follow at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the funeral home chapel with his pastor Bruce Galyon and M. Glenn Jones officiating.  Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s name to Red Bank United Methodist Church, 3800 Dayton Blvd., Red Bank, Tn. 37415, Siskin Rehabilitation Hospital, 1 Siskin Plaza, Chattanooga, Tn. 37403, or to the Red Bank Pet Placement Center, 5975 Dayton Blvd., Red Bank, Tn. 37415.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
