In a public meeting, representatives from the Chattanooga Department of Transportation announced plans to create a neighborhood greenway off of Virginia Avenue in the St. Elmo community.

Called the Virginia Avenue Greenway Project, the new greenway will be designed to give bikers and pedestrians priority access.

The greenway will be approximately 1.4 miles long, extending from West 55th Street to the intersection of St. Elmo Avenue and Tennessee Avenue.

Through "shared-use pathways," the greenway will be connected to the village center, the St. Elmo Park and to the Safewalk at Ben Miller Park. Connecting to the village center will allow residents to safely bike or walk to nearby restaurants and stores. It will also give them a way to access the post office and voting precinct without having to drive a vehicle.

The DOT plans to use measures such as traffic tables and additional signs to slow traffic in the area.

To make the area safer, lighting will also be installed along the pedestrian walkways.

Eventually, the DOT would like to connect the St. Elmo area to downtown Chattanooga. This would make biking to work a safe option for many residents. If more residents took advantage of this transportation alternative, it would also help cut traffic congestion, said officials.

Construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 2015.
