LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Heading into the final stretch of the regular season, the Covenant men's soccer team has its eyes on the top of the USA South standings. The Scots kept pace with conference leader Greensboro by defeating Averett 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Scotland Yard.
Covenant remains just a few points behind Greensboro for first in the conference. Greensboro defeated Piedmont 5-0 earlier on Friday and has one more match on Saturday at Maryville to conclude the regular season. Should the Pride lose or draw, the door would be open for Covenant to earn the No.
1 seed in the USA South tournament should the Scots win their final two matches.
Covenant (10-4-2, 6-1-1 USA South) got a goal from Snoopy Davidson in the 67th minute of play, assisted by Mike Arango, and was able to hold off a pesky Averett team for the victory. The goal for Davidson was his seventh of the year, tying him with Joel Friesen for the team lead.
Daniel Kubin made two saves in recording his fifth shutout of the year.
The Scots had several chances in the opening period to score first, but were denied each time as the match went scoreless into halftime. In the second half, Covenant outshot Averett 13-2 but only needed the one to find the back of the net for the difference in the match.
Davidson led Covenant with 10 shots as the Scots held a 19-6 lead in that category. Martin Erenstedt made six saves for Averett (4-10-1, 2-5-1 USA South). Nathan Brown and Sam Muir each took two shots for the Cougars.
Covenant will wrap-up its home regular season schedule on Saturday against USA South opponent William Peace.
