Robert Valton Thacker was born October 14, 1919 where he was reared on farms in Forsyth County, North Carolina. After high school he was employed as a stock boy at the local Kress store in Winston-Salem. After working in five stores he became manager in five additional stores, coming to Chattanooga in 1958.

He left Kress in 1962 and formed a partnership “Style-Crest Furniture” making upholstered goods. The plant was sold in 1972 and he entered retirement.

He was a veteran of World War II, a past president of the Optimist Club, and a member of the First Babtist Church in Chattanooga. In 1960 he married Laura Selcer Clark who died in 2008. His first wife Ruby Sink died in 1957.

Surviving are his daughter, Betsy (Wayne) Merritt, son, Mike (Diana) Thacker, and beloved stepdaughter, Ann (Bob) Beatty, also eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

His burial in Pitts Cemetery at Falling Water Cumberland Presbyterian Church has been made according to his wishes next to his dear wife, Laura. with deepest regards to friends and associates he leaves to join his Maker.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, at Falling Water Cumberland Presbyterian Church. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the church.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
