Covenant Seniors Celebrate 9-1 Soccer Win

  • Saturday, October 25, 2014

The Covenant men's soccer team recognized its 10 seniors before Saturday's match against William Peace and then went out and took their largest victory of the season with a 9-1 defeat of the visiting Pacers.

Covenant goes to 11-4-2 overall on the year and 7-1-1 in USA South play.

William Peace drops to 3-12 overall and 1-8 in league play.

Seniors David Huertas, Snoopy Davidson, Danny Knight and Builder Brock accounted for five of Covenant's scores on the afternoon. The senior class -- consisting of Huertas, Davidson, Knight, Builder Brock, Hudson Brock, Gordon Carpenter, Roy Anderson, Ian Meredith, Joel Friesen and Hunter Harrison -- has led the Scots to 40 victories over the last four years.Co

Huertas scored his two goals in a span of less than two minutes in the first half. Knight assisted in Huertas' first score in the 14th minute and Davidson provided the assist in the 16th minute. The two goals give Huertas three on the season.

Covenant was far from done scoring in the first half. Davidson added a goal of his own in the 25th minute, assisted by Meredith, and Knight notched his first goal of the year in the 31st minute. Mike Arango put the Scots ahead 5-0 in the 37th minute, assisted by Noah Wiersema, and Hunter Brock capped the first half scoring barrage with a goal in the 44th minute from Andrew Jablon.

Builder Brock registered his first career goal in the 53rd minute from fellow senior Carpenter. Wiersema followed with an unassisted goal in the 66th minute. Hunter Brock tallied his second goal of the match in the 82nd minute to put the Scots ahead 9-1.

Daniel Kubin and Jonathan Crossman split time minding the net. Kubin made one save, while Crossman made three. William Peace's lone goal came on a penalty kick in the 70th minute from Enrique Ochoa.

Overall, Covenant held an 18-6 edge in shots.

Even with the win, Covenant was eliminated from a chance at being the USA South regular season champions. With Greensboro's 1-0 win at Maryville on Saturday, the Pride have wrapped up the regular season title at the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Covenant has clinched a top four spot in the USA South and will host a Quarterfinal match next Saturday at Scotland Yard. Game time and opponent is yet to be determined.

Covenant wraps up the regular season on Tuesday at Piedmont in Demorest, Ga. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
