Lee's Yelton Wins No. 300 Sunday

  • Sunday, October 26, 2014
Lee women's soccer coach Matt Yelton achieved win No. 300 of his career as the Lady Flames blanked Union University, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Gulf South Conference (GSC) action.

The game-winner came in the first half in the 34th minute as senior Michelle Spangler headed in the score off a corner kick by Kinsey Cichowitz.
Spangler now has two goals on the year while Cichowitz leads the team with five assists.

Yelton improves his outstanding career mark to 300-82-16 overall. He has recorded 246 of those victories as the leader of the Lady Flames, including an unprecedented four-straight NAIA national titles from 2008-2011.

The victory moves the red-hot Lee squad to 10-4-1 overall and 9-1 in GSC play. Yelton's club has now won five straight matches and 9 of their last 10. The Lady Flames can finish atop the conference standings with road wins against Shorter (Oct. 31) and Alabama-Huntsville (Nov. 2) still remaining on the schedule.

"We somehow manage to continue to win these one-goal matches and survive," said Yelton. "We haven't put together pretty performances but at the end of the day a win is a win and we'll take it. We are so beat up right now I couldn't even begin to list all the injuries but our team continues to battle from game to game and I'm really proud of the character this team is demonstrating."

Lee senior goalkeeper Marbel Egwuenu registered her sixth shutout of the year and was credited with seven saves in the contest. Union keeper Emily Waggoner had eight saves while allowing the one goal.

"Marbel was outstanding today and without her performance in goal we would not have won," noted Yelton. "Michelle played an outstanding game as well and has been a consistent and steady force all year long for us. We've had players step up all year long for us and today was Michelle and Marbel's day."

The Lady Flames outshot the Lady Bulldogs 21-10. Lee put nine shots on frame while Union tallied seven. The Lady Flames were awarded eight corners and scored on one of those set pieces. The home team earned four corner kicks.

Lee will look to make it six straight victories and earn Yelton win No. 301 as they head to Rome, Ga. to test rival Shorter University on Friday at 3 p.m.
