If passenger trains still reached the charming town of Pikeville at the upper reaches of the Sequatchie Valley, they no doubt would be as full as those bringing economic revival to Blue Ridge, Ga., and Copperhill,Tn.
Pikeville, which first got train service in 1891, still has many historic buildings and homes.
Colonel James A. Whiteside, who worked tirelessly to bring the railroad from Atlanta to Chattanooga, lived at Pikeville before moving to Ross's Landing.
But the tracks at Pikeville were long ago pulled up.
The depot was taken down, and the wye where the engines were reversed was removed.
The Sequatchie Valley Railroad in its heyday ran from Bridgeport, Ala., to Pikeville. It now goes from Bridgeport to just south of Jasper.
