Joan Hill Hanks Speaks At ElderScholars Meeting Oct. 14

  • Friday, October 3, 2014

Joan Hill Hanks will speak at the October ElderScholars meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Lookout Mountain Room of the University Center.

Ms. Hill Hanks will give a program on "Commemoration of 200th Anniversary of Star Spangled Banner," telling about Francis Scott Key, Battle for Ft. McHenry on Sept. 13 and 14, 1814, the making of the huge flag that inspired him that had 15 stars and 15 stripes, and its restoration, and also telling about the man that coined the title "Old Glory."  She also will talk about the states' numbers as they became part of the United States, and their capitols.  She will hand out a sheet with all this information, and she can recite all 50 states and capitols.

Ms. Hill Hanks is a member of several patriotic organizations:  Daughters of American Revolution, U.S. Daughters of 1812, Daughters of American Colonists, Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century, and United Daughters of Confederacy.  She served as Tennessee State president of Daughters of 1812 from 1994-1997 when Tennessee was celebrating their Bicentennial in 1996.  She wrote a "Tennessee Bicentennial Rap 1796-1996" that was passed by Tennessee State Legislature as Official Bicentennial Rap and performed it over 50 times across the state in 1996.  She wanted everyone to know Tennessee was the Volunteer State from the War of 1812.  We are now celebrating the Bicentennial of War of 1812 from 2012 to 2015.

In 2013 Ms. Hank Hill was presented the National Society U. S. Daughters of 1812 “Spirit of 1812 Award” for her study, and dedication to the preservation of the history of people, places and events of the War of 1812.

The meeting starts at 1 p.m.  Different from previous years, parking is free only in Lot 7 which is at Douglas and East Fifth Street near the Maclellan Gym, or across East Fifth Street from Lot 7 at the Fifth Street Parking Garage (the high rise parking garage).  As always, guests may park in Lot 7, with a letter on the dashboard indicating attending the ElderScholar meeting.  If parking in the high rise, tell the attendant that you have been attending the ElderScholar meeting.
