The Shorter University Hawks celebrated homecoming afternoon with a 4-2 victory over the Lee University men's soccer team at the Ben Brady Field
on Friday.
The win allowed the Hawks to improve to 5-4-0 in the important Gulf South Conference (GSC) race and 7-9-1 overall. The Flames slipped to 7-8-2 in overall play and dropped to 2-6-1 in the GSC. Lee will close out the regular season
on Saturday (
Nov.8) when they travel to Franklin Springs, Ga.
and face an old SSAC rival in Emmanuel College.
"I can't say I envisioned our team being where we are right now," admitted Lee coach Paul Furey. "But, we have one game left to turn it around."
Shorter jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first half on a header by Robert Ochieng. It came off a corner kick by Charlie Dennis. Shorter increased the margin to 2-0 in the 59th minute on a goal by Dennis. The lead reached 3-0 in the 62nd minute. This time, on a score by Nico Stutley.
The Flames broke the scoring ice in the 71st minute when Garrison Adams knocked in a penalty kick, but Shorter increased the lead to 4-1 less than two minutes later when Lucas Cavenco scored. The final goal of the night came on what coach Furey described as "one for the highlight reel." Freshman Matt Brady did the honors. He was assisted by another freshman, Miles Scott.
The Flames attempted 11 shots and placed seven on goal. However, Shorter keeper Nicolas Ferrigno collected five key saves. The Hawks had 14 shots and placed eight on target. Lee's Joey Hinshaw was credited with four saves.
