GPS Mathletes
At the 2014 UT Pro2Serve Math Contest for Tennessee high school students, GPS junior Hope Newberry was a top 50 finisher on the FERMAT I (Fundamental Exams of Remarkable Mathematical Ability and Talent) Examination.
She and the students who competed in the annual challenge are mathletes, defined as engaging in math competitions at any level. Ms. Newberry joins several GPS students from past years who were also on the top-50 list.
Approximately 750 contestants came from across the state’s public and private schools, and all top 50 finishers then took an additional one-hour test (FERMAT II). Results from this will be available at a later time.
Ms. Newberry joined senior Hannah Thel and juniors Christina Love and Ayushi Sinha to compete in the Pro2Serve Math Bowl. The girls were not able to compete in the final rounds because of transportation back to Chattanooga, but their success in the competition led GPS Math Department Chair Chris Zeller to plan for an overnight trip to Knoxville next year and a hoped-for top finish in the team event.
