Covenant Women Drop Basketball Opener

  • Saturday, November 15, 2014
Inside of the Barnes PE Center, the Covenant women's basketball team fell to Oglethorpe 59-46 in their opening game of the season.

Morgan Woodward led the team in points and was the only player for the Scots in double-figures with 11. Jessica Bell added nine while shooting a perfect 2-of-2 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Abbey Bailey pulled down 16 rebounds to go with six points in the first collegiate game of her career.

After falling behind 7-0 to start the game, Covenant came back to take an 8-7 lead on a jumper by Woodward and 3-pointers by Haley Soles and Kiersten Nielsen. It would be their only lead of the game as Kristen Kennebrew would hit a 3-pointer of her own for the Stormy Petrels on the next possession to ignite a seven-point run by Oglethorpe.

The Scots continued to battle, however, and were able to close the gap to 22-21 before going into halftime down 30-25.

In the second half, the Stormy Petrels pulled away with a 10-0 run to start the final period. Oglethorpe's Emily Buck scored six straight points during the run.

From that point, the Scots were not able to cut the deficit to single digits, while Oglethorpe led by as many as 19 before cruising to the finish with a comfortable 13-point victory.

Covenant shot 30 percent from the floor, and was 14-of-28 from the free throw line. They got to the line 18 more times than their opponents, who shot 6-of-10. The Stormy Petrels shot 38.1 percent from the floor, while outrebounding the Scots 46-39.

Ciaira Hughes paced Oglethorpe with a game-high 17 points and 17 rebounds. She also collected three blocks in 30 minutes. Katie Stewart was the only other player in double-figures for Oglethorpe as she netted 11 points.

Next up for the Scots is a road date with Sewanee on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. EST.
